About maskyourdocs
maskyourdocs is a free tool for redacting documents before you share them. It removes names, numbers and other personal details from PDFs, Word files, images and text files, and it does the whole job in your browser, so the document is never uploaded anywhere.
Why it exists
Every day people paste contracts, payslips, bank statements and medical letters into ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, or email them to strangers, along with every name, address and account number in them. Once a document has been uploaded, you can't take it back.
The usual fixes don't help much. Drawing a black box in a PDF viewer leaves the text underneath, where anyone can copy it back out. Most online redaction tools ask you to upload the very document you're worried about. maskyourdocs was built so that someone careful enough to redact a document doesn't have to trust yet another service with it.
How it works
- Everything runs on your device. The file is opened, marked and exported inside the browser tab. After the first visit the site even works offline.
- You choose what goes. Draw a box, select the words, or search for a name or number and mask every copy of it at once.
- Redaction removes, it doesn't cover. In a PDF, every page you marked is rebuilt as an image with the black bars burned in, so there's no text left underneath. Pages you didn't touch are copied through unchanged and stay searchable. Images are repainted pixel by pixel. In Word and text files, the marked text is replaced with a placeholder.
- The result is checked. After export, the file is reopened and searched for every value you marked. If one is still readable anywhere, you're told before you download.
What it can't do
maskyourdocs doesn't detect personal data on its own, read text in scanned pages, or mask pictures embedded inside a Word file. You decide what to remove, and the check after export can only confirm what you marked. The guides cover how to handle each kind of document, including those cases.
Who builds it
maskyourdocs is built and run by an independent developer, @mambacodes. It's free to use with no account, watermark or page limit. Ads on the home page and guides pay for keeping it that way, and the redaction tool itself is kept free of them. You can read exactly what the site collects in the Privacy Policy.
